Chapter Seventeen

Restless and in need of something constructive to do with her hands, Shaw returned to the shop to finish her project she’d started before Kate had arrived. The sun was almost gone by the time she finished. She’d constructed a steel podium for the old porcelain basin. She carried the metal stand to the house and set it down in the grass several yards from the porch. Then she carefully fit the basin onto the steel supports. She trotted into the house for a pitcher of water and filled the basin.

She stepped back a few feet to admire her handiwork, a shabby chic birdbath. The water in the basin caught the red orange of the setting sun. Shaw tapped the surface of the water and watched bands of orange ripple out from the center.

There were still two beers left in the fridge when she checked. She returned to the porch with one of them. She leaned the chair back against the wall and propped her booted foot up on the railing. She’d changed out of her shorts before heading to the shop even though the air temp was still warm. Welding required long sleeves, long pants, and boots. Natural fabrics were the best. In case of sparks, natural fibers didn’t melt to your skin. That was always a bonus.

She sipped the beer and tried to decide if she was hungry since she hadn’t eaten since lunch. Thinking of lunch made her think of Kate. What had she said to upset Kate? Was it the kid thing? That was the last thing they’d talked about before she dropped Kate off. Shaw tried to remember exactly what she’d said. Nothing stood out to her, but something had definitely altered Kate’s mood.

Maybe she should give Kate a call and apologize. But how could she apologize when she wasn’t even sure what she’d done? Forget it. She needed another shower before she could even think about food.

Under the stream of hot water, Shaw examined old wounds. Not the internal ones, those were much deeper. The burns she’d gotten in her college years when she was just learning to use the torch. They weren’t bad and they didn’t even show when she wore long sleeved shirts. If anyone noticed them they might just think they were birthmarks. Small, raised red marks on the inside of her left wrist.

She traced the raised marks with her thumb. She closed her eyes and let the water rain down on her. After she’d toweled off, she pulled on sweats and a T-shirt and stretched out on the sofa facing the living room window. The ridgeline was nothing more than a pink thread zigzagging across the near dark sky. She folded her arm behind her head and waited for the house to darken as she watched the pink line fade to gray and then disappear.

She was suspended in warmth and darkness. Floating. The muscles in Shaw’s arms and shoulders relaxed. Then space opened up. Everything dropped away. She was in a free fall.
